Teacher Sheryll

Sheryll has a degree in Elementary Education and a specific interest in Early Childhood Education.  She has spent the last year working with the Preschool Outreach program for Edmonton Catholic Schools.  Sheryll’s job was to meet the special needs of three particular children but doing so in a broad based manner, so that the activities planned benefited all in the room.  Sheryll’s goal was to continually find ways to enrich the room for all the children.  She did this by frequently changing the centres and setting up new ones, hosting a circle time that included story telling, songs, and games, and always looking for new ways to enhance the environment for the children.

The environment Sheryll would like to create in the classroom is one that provides a sense of connection and belonging among the students and teachers, and provokes curiosity and a sense of wonder in the child.  She plans to take the time to assess the children's interests throughout the year to help determine what themes to explore and to create an environment that supports the learning as we go along.  Open-ended materials and spaces allow children to be creative and use things in many different imaginative ways.  She sees her key role as facilitating the children's play and ensuring it allows them to develop and flourish.

Sheryll has previously been involved in learn-through-play co-operative preschools as a parent and a substitute teacher and has very fond memories of these years, recognizing how important they are to both the children and the parents.  Sheryll loves how the co-operative aspect of the program gets everyone so involved and she welcomes the opportunity to work with the community of parents at Greenfield Community Nursery School.

Aside from being passionate about children's literature, finger painting, and singing songs with children, some of the things Sheryll likes to do are: spending time with her own three children, walking her dog Sally in the ravine, doing yoga, going to the theatre, making pottery, and reading.
